For a while now, I’ve been looking for a good Beginner’s Bible for Little Miss. I remember my first Bible to this day, so I knew it was important to find a great one. I have to say, I was very impressed with The Beginning Reader’s Bible, Illustrated by Marijke ten Cate. This Bible takes favorite stories from the Old and New Testaments and presents them using text from the International Children’s Bible and vivid illustrations.
You can look up specific stories if you’d like, or read from beginning to end. There is even a reading chart in the back so children can check off the stories they have read so far and the date that they read them.
In addition to the scripture, there are boxes throughout the book: Remember God’s Word, Do God’s Word, and Pray God’s Word. Remember God’s Word has short verses that are good for memorization exercises. Do God’s Word has great, easy activities that children can do to enforce the scripture. Pray God’s Word are verses from the Psalms that make great prayers.
I love the illustrations in this book. The colors are vivid and all of the pictures add a lot to the stories that they are telling. They are great at capturing a child’s attention as well! There is a resource guide in the back of the Bible with lots of helpful tools, and a ribbon to hold your place. Even though Little Miss used the ribbon as a “handle” to carry the Bible around, it stood up to the abuse! The Bible is hardcover, and I expect it to last a very long time.
I think this is a great Beginner’s Bible. With thirteen stories from each Testament, it’s a great start to getting to know the Bible. My only complaint is that although the Contents section lists page numbers, there aren’t any in the book, which can make it a little difficult to find a specific section.
