Lately, I’ve been reading a lot about what schools expect children to know when they enter school – it’s a lot! I’ve been reading tons of articles about how the more children know in the early years of life the more likely they are to succeed. Of course I want to give my daughter as much of an upper hand in life as possible! On the other hand, I don’t want to turn learning into something you have to do at the stage in her life.
That’s the great thing about the Steps4Kids program. We reviewed the Modern Manuscript DVD. The writing “lessons” are very short, and they make learning to write fun instead of work. Each demonstration is preceded by a colorful graphic that shows the letter, introduces the letter’s sound and sight words to help viewers develop reading skills. We’re watching a lesson or two a week, and I’m hoping that she’ll pick up a fair amount of writing before she starts Kindergarten.
The DVD groups letters according to the basic strokes used to form the letters. Little Miss really enjoys the drawing breaks where we use letters to make different drawings. I really enjoy how this helps her learn while she’s having fun! It’s no wonder this DVD won “Media of the Year” in 2010 by CreativeChild Magazine.
