My husband loves beer.  So naturally, he loves making it as well.  If you are looking for gifts for beer lovers on your Christmas list this year, they are sure to enjoy this Beer Making Kit from Uncommon Goods!  The kit is a small one – it makes the equivalent of about a twelve pack.  This is great for people with small spaces or beginners.  It’s great to be able to start small when learning how to make beer – making 5 gallons just to find out it isn’t good is no fun!

This kit has almost everything you need to make the beer.  There are a few things that aren’t included – I’m going to list them here so you’ll know right away.  A 6 quart Stock Pot, 10 Grolsch bottles (or other swingtop), fine mesh strainer (we didn’t have this, and ended up using some porch screen we had left over from something in a colander), and a funnel.  You’ll also need three tablespoons honey when you do the bottling.  We used our own thermometer as well, since we have one that clips onto a pot.  They include a glass one in the kit, but you’ll have to hold it when you’re using it.

My husband has made beer before, but this was his first time making beer using all grains instead of extracts.  The great thing about all grain beers is that once you have a good understanding of the process, you can do a lot of different things to customize you flavors.  You can change the grains, the hops, or the sweetener.

Since it was all grains, the process took a little longer than he’s used to.  Plan on spending about three hours (four hours if you count the cooling process) making your beer.  The directions were clear and easy to follow.  We haven’t been able to taste the beer yet, since you don’t bottle it until two weeks after you make it and then you let those bottles sit for two weeks before you drink them, but it smelled really good while he was making it, which is always a good sign!

This is a great gift for the beer-lover on your list!  You can also check out their Best Gifts for Men on this page and their Best Gifts for Dad here!
