Do You Need Help Getting Your Children Excited About Saving Energy?

It’s so important to get our children excited about saving energy when they are young, so it’s normal for them.  Little Miss already knows it’s important to reduce, reuse, and recycle, and she’s starting to grasp the importance of saving energy.  I know we’ll be signing up for Team Energy Star to make this easier!

What’s the impact of ENERGY STAR?

Over the past 20 years, Americans with help from ENERGY STAR have saved nearly $230 billion on utility bills, preventing more than 1.7 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions.

Team ENERGY STAR, which launched June 5, is a new, exciting initiative from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR program, developed to engage and educate American youth and their families about saving energy in the home. Team ENERGY STAR empowers kids to help protect the climate through easy-to-implement, money-saving actions and provides them an outlet for sharing their passion for preserving our environment. And, with Dr. Seuss’ the Lorax as the engaging theme for Team ENERGY STAR, kids can learn and have fun at the same time.

Being part of the team involves the following simple steps:

· Take steps to reduce your energy use at home

· Help your family and friends save energy

· Encourage your family and friends to take the ENERGY STAR Pledge

· Inspire others by sharing your story

Kids can join Team ENERGY STAR by visiting energystar.gov/team where they will get easy-to-download educational and interactive materials, such as a comprehensive Action Kit, the ENERGY STAR Home Check-Up, a Lorax activity booklet and a Lorax mustache-making kit. Kids are also encouraged to come back and share their stories about protecting the environment by saving energy, which will be showcased on energystar.gov/changetheworld and throughout social media.

Attend an event in your area to learn ways to take control of your energy bills while contributing to a cleaner environment. You can also take the ENERGY STAR Pledge at energystar.gov/pledge and join 2.8 million other Americans who are taking action to protect the climate. If every American household took part in the Change the World, Start with ENERGY STAR Pledge, we would: save more than 126 billion KWh/yr of electricity, save $18 billion in annual energy costs, and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions from 20 million cars.

Why is saving energy important?

About 70 percent of the electricity we use comes from power plants burning fossil fuels. Burning fossil fuels causes greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change – a real and urgent challenge affecting people and the environment, worldwide. Using energy-efficient products and practices reduces the amount of carbon pollution added to the atmosphere and can lessen the effects of climate change.

How can climate change impact our health?

The Earth’s climate is changing in ways that can have serious consequences for public health. Climate change will likely increase the number of people suffering from illness and injury due to more pollution, extreme heat, floods, storms, droughts and fires as well as allergies and infectious disease. The elderly, the very young, the disabled, and the poor alone are especially vulnerable, as are people with heart disease or asthma. Climate change is also expected to cause more severe allergy symptoms because a warmer climate promotes the growth of molds, weeds, grasses and trees that cause allergic reactions.

Please come back on June 12, when Big Green Purse will be hosting a carnival of posts from many bloggers who support energy efficiency and Team ENERGY STAR.

I use energy saving light bulbs and keep lights turned off rooms I’m not in.

  3. Dawn A. says:

We just moved to a house with lots of windows. There is little reason to turn any light on. It is fantastic! We’re having the energy company come out and put a switch on our a/c to limit it’s use and help not to over load the grid. The house has fans that helps too. Once I went to this website my kids ran over and got all excited. Thanks for the notice about this!

    • That’s great! Glad they’re enjoying the website! We open our blinds instead of turning on lights too – unless it’s really hot out, and we don’t want to let the heat in. We have really thick blinds to help reduce temperature transfer.

For kids, make it about the lights. turn them off if not in use.
for parents, make it about the ac/furnace. Adjust the settings when no one is in the house. Automatic is nice, but there are a lot of times where the schedule changes and you can save energy by backing off the heat and cooling settings.
